Lar Recanto do Carinho is an institutional shelter, located in Florianopolis, in the Southern State of Santa Catarina – Brazil. This shelter helps children referred by the Childhood and Youth Court and other Protection Bodies.
The institution relies mainly on donations and the income generated from its charity shop. Only 40% of the costs are covered by local government bodies. The coronavirus pandemic has had a financial impact on donations including and the closure of its Charity Shop.

ABOUT THE SHELTER
Our history
Funded in July 1992 as a project of the AIDS Prevention Support Group / GAPA. The Shelter was initially a home for vulnerable HIV positive children and teenagers and children with different stages of AIDS. The lack of information on how to deal with AIDS at the time, and the discrimination towards HIV positive people, was a very difficult period for orphaned children with HIV. Therefore a special place was created to support and assist the needs of these children with dignity and love.
Today, the Shelter is home for children and teenagers victims of negligence, abandonment and physical, psychological and sexual violence. These children move to the Shelter after referrals from the Child and Youth Court and other Protection Government Bodies.
Our current situation
The Shelter hosts children of different ages, and in different stages of AIDS, some are bedbound and tube fed, requiring full-time specialized care. The shelter also has a nursery to support low-income families from the local community.
Since February 2016, the shelter is no longer part of GAPA. It has become an Association, with its own Legal Entity Registration (Brazilian CNPJ).
Our Charity Shop is open Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 4 pm. The bazaar is located next to Lar, at R. Rui Barbosa, 810 - Agronômica, Florianópolis - SC, 88025-301.
